I found an interview I did with Tajai of Souls of Mischief / Hieroglyphics from June of 1997 on an old hard drive and thought I would re-share it with the world. I say “re-share” because it originally lived on Hieroglyphics.com, the website I created in the mid-90’s with the Hiero Crew.
Listen to the interview here:
Every week or so Tajai and I would speak on the phone and I would get the latest happenings with the Hiero Crew and write about it on Hiero Online. We didn’t record many of the conversations which is what makes this particular conversation special, I think.
The interview was originally streamed in RealAudio; a technology that delivered streaming audio to web browsers for the very first time. But for everyone’s convenience, I have converted the interview into a more modern audio format 😂.
The interview was recorded in June of 1997 during a really interesting and exciting point in the Hieroglyphics timeline. For example, here are just a few of the points covered in the 7-minute interview:
- Tajai is still attending college at Stanford
- Audio mixing on Hiero’s first independent album, 3rd Eye Vision is nearing completion — around 4 songs left (the album would release 9 months later in March 1998)
- “After Dark,” the very first single released on the fledging Hieroglyphics Imperium record label, is just a week or two away from release
- The Hiero B-Sides cassette is nearing its debut release on the website
- And much more
Definitely check out the interview. And if you find this interesting, be sure to check out my other interviews with Hiero members from back in the day, such as this one with Domino. Or these Del the Funky Homosapien video game reviews.
