The Sega Dreamcast video game console just celebrated its 20th birthday in North America on 9/9/19 and it was the perfect excuse for me to dig into my video archives and share the footage I shot at the system’s launch party in San Francisco, California on September 10th, 1999.
Hosted at Club Townsend, the Sega Dreamcast launch party was an amazing event with a giant brain suspended above the open bar (from the famous North American marketing campaign “It’s Thinking”), as well as massive screens rolling game footage. I was working with Hieroglyphics at the time and Del the Funky Homosapien, Pep Love and Khaos Unique were booked to perform. I had my trusty Hi8 video camera with me and captured most of the Hiero performances.
“Proto Culture,” Del’s ode to video games, was a massive hit at the show. Without further ado, here is the footage!
For a history of Del’s relationship with video games & otaku culture, read “The History of Del the Funky Homosapien & Video Games.”
